Tonight’s sky

Saturday 31 October, seen from Stockholm. Drag the time and watch the Moon and planets cross the sky during the night.

Sky view · the whole horizon

Where is everything?

South is in the middle. The planets are computed with the same ephemeris as the Moon, so positions are accurate to a fraction of a degree.

Meetings with the Moon

When the Moon passes a planet

The Moon moves about its own width every hour. That is why it seems to pass each planet once a month.

Sun & twilight · 19 Nov

Three twilights before it gets dark

Each twilight ends when the Sun has sunk another six degrees below the horizon. After astronomical twilight the sky is fully dark. In Stockholm in November it takes two and a half hours from sunset to darkness.

Lunar libration 59%

The Moon always turns the same face to us, almost. Its orbit is elliptical and tilted, so over a month it rocks back and forth and lets us peek around the edges.

Size in perspective · 2027

Closest and farthest

The Moon’s orbit is an ellipse. When a full moon happens near perigee it is called a supermoon. It looks up to 14% larger and about 30% brighter than a full moon at apogee.

Along the terminator tonight

Where light meets dark, crater walls cast long shadows and the surface looks almost three-dimensional. Ordinary binoculars are enough. The edge moves about 12° each night.

    Spring tide

When Sun, Earth and Moon line up

At new and full moon the Sun and Moon pull in the same direction, and the tides peak a day or two later. At the quarters they pull in different directions and the range is small. That is called a neap tide.

    November’s is the Beaver Moon

Traps were set before the lakes froze. The names come from North America but are now used far beyond it. Every month has its own, and the full moon closest to the autumn equinox is the Harvest Moon.
